DORN LUDWIK (1954-2022)
Marshal of the Sejm of V term (27.04.2007 - 4.11.2007)
Ludwik Dorn was born on 5th June 1954 in Warsaw. He graduated from the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Warsaw with an M.A. in sociology. From early 1970s, he was affiliated with the anti communist opposition, which was evidenced by, inter alia, his engagement in the activities of the 1st Warsaw Scout Troop, commonly referred to as the "The Black Number One," which operated in his school . the Tadeusz Reytan Secondary School No 4 in the Mokotów district. He joined the Workers. Defence Committee the moment it was established (in September 1976). In 1977, he became an editor of one of the first underground monthlies . "Głos" (The Voice"). He was a member of the Independent Self governing Trade Union "Solidarity" and of the Club for the Self-Governing Republic "Freedom Justice Independence" (starting in September 1980). After the introduction of the martial law on 13th December 1981, an arrest warrant was issued on him. Yet, he managed to avoid arrest. He created the underground Centre for Documentation and Analyses and edited the clandestine weekly entitled "Wiadomo¶ci" ("The News"). From the beginning of the 1990s, he was affiliated, first as a member, then as a deputy leader, with the Centre Agreement. In 1991, he was appointed the head of the Team for Analyses in the Chancellery of President Lech Wałęsa.
He was among the founders of the Law and Justice. Until the end of the 4th term of the Sejm, he was the chair of the Parliamentary Club of the Law and Justice. On 31st October 2005, Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz nominated him as the Minster of the Interior and Administration. He resigned from the office on 7th February 2007. He remained a Deputy Prime Minster in the Government of Jarosław Kaczyński, focusing his efforts on, among others, computerisation programmes.
On 27th April 2007, he was elected by the majority of votes as the Marshal of the Sejm of the 5th term. He remained in this office until 5th November 2007. He was re-elected to the Sejm of the 6th term.
On 5th November 2007, he resigned from the function of a deputy chair of the Law and Justice, and in October 2008, he was expelled from the party. In March 2010, he announced that he would stand for the presidential election, but resigned after the Smoleńsk plane crash. In December 2010, he renewed his engagement with the Law and Justice. In the parliamentary election of 2011, he became a Deputy once again, representing the Law and Justice. He retained the mandate. In the Sejm of the 7th term, he was initially a non aligned Deputy. In December 2011, he joined the Parliamentary Club of the Solidarity Poland.
On 24.05.2014, he surrendered his membership in the parliamentary club of that party. In the elections to the European Parliament, he was the first on the list of Solidarity Poland in the Mazovian electoral district, however the party did not reach the minimum threshold. In 2015, he was not reelected as a deputy from the list of candidates of Civic Platform. Deceased 7.04.2022.
He has translated several novels by John Le Carre and Len Deighton into Polish. He has also published many essays on literature, a rhymed children.s story entitled "O ¶piochu tłu¶ciochu i psie Sabie" (On the Chubby Sleepyhead and Saba the Dog), which received a honorary mention in the nationwide competition "Great Poets Writing for Children," and his memoirs entitled "Rozrachunki i wyzwania" (Score-Settling and Challenges,2009).
