A diplomat, advocate of Polish armed interference in Muscovy during the reign of Zygmunt III Vasa and Władysław IV. He bravely led his own military unit in the battle of Kircholm (1605). Between 1606-11 he took part in the campaigns of both False Dimitris. He distinguished himself in the battlefield of Smolensk in 1610. A military commander - fought with the Swedes in Livonia (1621-28). During the 1633-34 war with Muscovy he went to relieve besiedged Smolensk, defended Witebsk, Orsza and Mscislaw and then participated in peace talks (Polanowo truce)
