Grand Master of the Pantry of Lithuania from 1646, Grand Treasurer ol Lithuania from 1652, Field Hetman of Lithuania from 1654.


He fought with the Cossacks (1648-51), distinguished himself in the battlefields of £ojowo (1649) and Chernobyl (1651). At the time of the Swedish invasion in 1655 he signed the act of recognizing King Charles Gustavus at Kiejdany. Then he objected to the Kiejdany pact and was imprisoned by Janusz Radziwi³³. Having been released he waged war against the Swedes in Lithuania. He took part in the battle of Warsaw (1656). Sent by Jan Kazimierz to Prussia, he scored a victory at Prostki. He concluded the Welawa-Bydgoszcz treaties with Elector of Brandenburg, Frederick Wilhelm. Defeated by the Russians at Werki (1658), he was taken prisoner. On coming back home in 1662, he joined the pro-French camp. He attempted to make the confederate Lithuanian army support the court policy. Accused of treason by the confederates, he was kidnapped from Vilna and shot.
