Marek Jurek was born on 28th June 1960 in Gorzów Wielkopolski. He graduated from the Faculty of
History of Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. At
the end of the 1970s, he was a democratic opposition activist. He participated
in the establishment of the Young Poland Movement (1979-89), and was a member
of central management of Independent Students. Association. In the 1980s, he
worked in the editorial office of an underground publication entitled "Polityka Polska" ("Polish
Politics") and in "Znaki Czasu" ("Signs of the Time") - a magazine
published by the Polish emigrants. community. In 1989, he was among the
founders of the Christian National Union - he was its deputy chair and presided
over its supreme council. He was a Deputy in the years 1989-93, and was re elected in 2001. In the periods of 1991-93 and 2004-05,
he served as a Deputy Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee. In the years
1995-2001, he was a member of the National Broadcasting Council, and at the
beginning - its head. In 2001, he contributed to establishing the Right
Alliance and chaired the party.s political board.
After the Right Alliance and the Law and Justice merged, he became a deputy
leader of the latter.
On 26th October 2005, at the first sitting of the Sejm of the 5th term, he was
elected its Marshal. He performed this function until 27th April 2007. On 14th
April 2007, he left the Law and Justice, and on 19th April 2007, he formed a
new party - the Right of the Republic of Poland.
In 2007, as an independent candidate, he ran for the Senate, and in 2009 - for
the European Parliament, but to no avail.
In the presidential election of 2010, he obtained 177,315 votes.
In 2014, he obtained a MEP seat, elected from the list of Law and Justice in
the Warsaw electoral district.
He was among the creators of the "Christianitas"
quarterly, and today he is its regular contributor. He also writes for "Niedziela" ("The Sunday"). His books include
"Reakcja jest objawem życia" (Reaction is a Sign of Life, 2000) and "Dysydent w Państwie POPiS" (A Dissident in the Civic Platform/Law and
Justice State, 2009).
In 2019, he unsuccessfully campaigned for a
mandate in the election to the European Parliament.
