He began his military career at the end of the reign of August II.
In 1773 he declared for Stanisław Leszczyński and, after the king's
defeat, left for France with him. He served as a volunteer in
the French army for 8 years. Back in the country he joined
the Potockis' 'Patriots' (opponents of 'Familia') continuing his
military and political career - e.g. he was a frequent Polish envoy
to foreign courts. In the Seym of 1748 he protested against
the Russian troops marching through Poland.
On behalf of the king he tried mediation with the leaders of
the Confederation of Bar (1768). A frequent deputy and member of
the Tribunal, he won renown as a prominent negotiator, respected
even by his opponents. A Knignt of the Order of the White Eagle(1776).
The first Polish Freemason, the founder of a Masonic lodge in
Warsaw (1744).
