He studied in the Knights' School 1767-71. In the Great Seym of 1788 he became the Marshal of the Lithuanian Confederation. Initially he inclined towards the hetman's faction (was related to Hetman Franciszek Ksawery Branicki), influenced by Małachowski, however, he joined the followers of the reforms and swore the Third May Constitution. He raised a strong protest against Stanisław August's access to the Targowica and left Poland. Following the outbreak of the Kościuszko Uprising, he came back and fought at the rank of artillery Captain, and after the defeat of the Insurrection he made for emigration again. His Seym speeches were published and his poems appeared in 'Zabawy Przyjemne i Pożyteczne'(Games Pleasant and Useful).
